The 2009 U.S. Open Golf Championship takes place at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park, Long Island, New York, which in 2002 became the first golf course public to host a major golf in the U.S. when it hosted the U.S. Open.
The course was very difficult too with only Tiger Woods of manage to finish under par, won the tournament that year by three shots from his greatest rival, Phil Mickelson. It was his second victory at the U.S. Open at the time, but was his last until he won last year in remarkable style, after a playoff with compatriot Rocco Mediate at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in California.
His victory was remarkable, having played five rounds of golf in a virtual leg either Mediate after a near career playoff round. Follow that success, Woods immediately withdrew the remainder of the tour in 2008 and underwent a knee surgery, which fortunately has fully recovered and is now back playing full time on the tour.
Woods, of course, will be favorite in the U.S. Open Golf bet to win again this year and as usual, there is little reason to doubt that it can carry it out and win his 15th major golf courses, especially in a course that has proven to be the way to win.
The players of the likes of Mickelson and Spain, Sergio García, would certainly be a threat to forests and both performed well when he played at Bethpage in 2002. Mickelson was second to Woods at par level, while Garcia finished in a tie for fourth place, 4 over par. Woods, Mickelson and Garcia are the three top ranked players in the world today and could you have to fight for the U.S. Open 2009 between them.
Antepost bets have Woods as the early favorite, with Mickelson and Garcia, behind him. Three times winner of the largest, Padraig Harrington and former U.S. Open champion, Geoff Ogilvy liekly also feature prominently and represent a big threat to all concerned.
Argentine Angel Cabrera, who won the U.S. Masters at Augusta in April this year, also won the U.S. Open in 2007 and that form is undoubtedly a major threat to win a major third.
In recent years the U.S. Open has tended to release a series of big winners unexpected and often for the first time. It seems that if Woods does not win then a new name appears on the trophy. Apart from Woods, only South Africa, Reteif Goosen has won more once. The following is a list of the last ten winners and five winners for the first time listed, you could spend your time worth studying how the players still have not won the U.S. Open.
