Of course, you could define the blues call-response structure, the dominant 7 chords, the shuffle rhythm, the I-IV-V and the progression of things like that, but more complete definition is that Eric Clapton was a blues music in an interview in 1998:

My definition of Blues is a musical form that is very disciplined and structured, with a mood, and you can have any of these things, but the two together to do what it is. And need to be students first, and a human on the other, but things alone do not. (Eric Clapton, 1998)

Blues History

There are many books on the history of the blues. Born in 20th century Mississippi Delta in the U.S., shortly after the War Civil. This style of music was performed by slaves and whites referred to as sorrow songs, plantation songs or songs everyday. The term blues was first used around 1925.

It is believed that the band leader William Christopher Handy was the first to write blues songs in 1909, then was printed and documented. The song was initially called Memphis Blues and received the name of Mister Crump later. He got his inspiration from a blues song he heard in Mississippi train station six years earlier. WC Handy wrote other songs too, as Beale Street Blues or St. Louis Blues and nowadays there is a prize of blues named after him – the WC Handy Award.

What Do You Need To Learn To Play Guitar Blues?

To learn to play blues guitar, there are some things you need. First, you need to own electric or acoustic guitar with strings made of nylon in standard tuning different. It is also necessary knowing how to read tablature, and some basic guitar knowledge and know how to play some chords.

You also need some classical CDs with Eric Clapton blues, as Blues Breakers, from the cradle or Eric Clapton Unplugged and a good CD player with an auto-shuffle repeat. There is also a plug-in for Winamp you can use to delay music. A small chord book you can find in any guitar shop is also helpful. But more importantly, to learn to play guitar blues, you need some good ears.

If you already have some basic knowledge of guitar, you can learn to play blues guitar on his own, with the aid of a simple chord book. However, finding a blues guitar teacher who is willing to help you learn to play blues guitar is definitely in your area a good thing. If you have the time and money to take private lessons, this will likely help to improve your skills.
