A report by the California Highway Patrol's investigation into the truck accident near Santa Clarita, last year concluded that the speed of the driver, played an important role in the accident. The report also expressed concern about the state of the tractor-trailer at the time of the accident the truck, and this, District Attorney fears could be used by the defense team as the main cause of the accident.

According to the Los Angeles Times, CHP research team recommended that vehicular manslaughter charges brought against the truck driver José Reyes, but prosecutors have declined. Meanwhile, the families of those killed or injured in the crash of a truck awaiting more test conclusive can pinpoint responsibility in this case.
